I am new here on the forum. Sorry but I do not read or write well in Polish. I can speak a little.
Anyway I am living here in Poland in the Katowice area. I have been detecting for just under 1 year using a Mielab SE Pro , Sun Ray Probe.
I would like to share pics of the modification I have just done to my SE shaft to accommodate the coil cable inside when using the Sun Ray Probe.
I didn't like the fact that you normally have to wrap the coil cord around the shaft as it must connect on the Sun Ray that is usually attached in the upper shaft.
I modified the upper shaft and shortened the coil cord to fit nicely. I shortened my SEF coil first to try it out and make sure it is OK before I shorten my Pro Coil. The coil wiring is very simple and anyone could do it if you have the tools. I actually cut the end off and put a new connector on and sealed it with hot glue. The machining on the shaft was easy but I had to do it on a milling machine in the after hours at work.

I also use Sunray probe with my Explorer. I agree that removing the cable out of the shaft wasn’t neither optimal nor professional.

I am bit concerned with the strength and robustness of your upper shaft now… Certainly it is weaker than before. Also it required shortening the coil cable – you have to do this with all the coils you may want to use. Not a bit problem as long as you are not going to sell such coils separately (without your modified detector). Water resistance is also reduced (water may enter the electronics easily trough the milled hole).

Since I also disliked the Sunray’s way of connecting the probe, I embedded the switch into my detector’s control box. I am not 100% happy with this and of course I could not recommend such modification to anyone for self assembly.

Przybył nam nowy użytkownik na forum, który mieszka w okolicy Katowic, ale polski zna słabo (trochę mówi w naszym języku).

Przedstawiał nam swoją propozycję na zamocowanie sondy Sun Ray (oryginalnie kabel z sondy wyciąga się z rurki i przyłącza do pudełka z przełącznikiem). W jego rozwiązaniu kabel nadal przebiega przez rurkę, ale to rozwiązanie wymagało wyfrezowania otworu w górnej rurce (co mnie zaniepokoiło ze względu na wytrzymałość rurki oraz wodoodporność). Nie spodobał mi się także pomysł skracania kabla sondy (trzeba by ciąć każdy kabel, w każdej używanej sondzie – takiej sondy nie dałoby się potem sensownie sprzedać bez całego wykrywacza).

Na koniec zaprezentowałem swoją wersję.

I jeszcze jedno. Z naszej korespondencji emailowej, wiem, że nasz zagraniczny kolega szuka kogoś angielskojęzycznego z kim mógłby pogadać (i nie tylko) o poszukiwaniach. Jakieś propozycje już dla niego miałem, ale gdyby ktoś chciał się zgłosić to zapraszam i dziękuję w jego imieniu.

Thanks for the reply and your mod pictures. I have just added two pics to show that have a plug/ramp that is molded with the same profile as the shaft and it sealed very well. Since I did not break the corners when I machined the stiffness is still very good but only time will tell. As far as the shorter coil cords , I plan to buy and Etrac very soon and I will transfer this system to that machine and put the new 11" pro coil on this machine.
I would like to have the probe switch in the handle where I can simple use my trigger finger to switch it. What do you think?
Are all SEF coils wired with the same 4 wires but only connected differently for each brand of machine?
I found a cheap XP SEF Coil Double Elliptical Coil 12" by 15" and I am wondering if it can be wired for the SE, E-trac?

Trigger finger = index finger? You mean toggle, stable positions switch (the same as Sunray's)? I do not see any advantages (?)

The coils of various manufacturers differ not only in the plugs but also in the internal wiring parameters, so I really doubt if SEF XP coil would fit the Explorer.

Nasz zagraniczny kolega kombinuje jakiś przełącznik w rączce - nie wiem dokładnie do czego zmierza.

Planuje też zastosowanie sondy XP (gdzieś tanio może kupić) do Explorera, wymieniając tylko wtyczkę. Powątpiewam w sukces takiej opercji.

Yes I made the plug, it is made from a forming material that gets hard after to two materials are mixed.
Index finger ( I call it the trigger finger for shooting guns), but I also see no advantage. So it would be a waste of time I suppose.
